Teaching your puppy to high five is a great way to celebrate a job well done! Just like in human society in the 80’s, a high five is an acceptable way to show your appreciation for a desired effect. So why not celebrate with you dog too!
Teaching your dog to high five is incredibly easy provided your dog knows how to shake hands.
Step 1: Preparation
Get yourself a pile of dog treats (the yummy kind, not the dry kind) a quiet place with no distractions, and a dog that knows how to shake hands.
Step 2: Begin
Start by offering your palm to your dog at the same height as you would for shake hands, but position your palm straight up offering a high five. Depending on how good your dog is at shake hands will determine how fast they pick this one up.
Instead of saying shake hands, say in an excited tone “HIGH-FIVE!” And reward your dog on each acceptable attempt. Remember that you dog doesn’t need to get it first time. Small steps towards the goal.
Step 3: Reinforcement
At the end of other training tasks you may be performing, celebrate your dogs success by offering a high five at the end of other training sessions. This is a great way to reinforce the trick and also, give your dog some additional praise after other training.
Remember to be calm, and patient with your dog when training. Puppies need more patience and tenderness. Never get frustrated or lose your temper when you dog doesn’t get it. Dogs respect calm humans, not frustrated humans!
And most of all have fun, like all dog training it is a great bonding experience and it brings you and your pooch closer together.
